Meet Matt Phelps: Shaping the future of data at Oneflow
Meet Matt Phelps, a key player in our Analytics team at Oneflow. He shared his journey into the world of data, his experiences in the ever-evolving data landscape, and how working at Oneflow has shaped his career..
You’ve had an interesting career path leading up to Oneflow. Can you tell us more about how you ended up here?
My journey started when I came to Sweden for love, actually! But before that, I wanted to be a spy. I was fascinated by James Bond movies and the fast-paced world of espionage, but real life hit, and I quickly realized the reality wasn’t quite like the movies.
So, I found my passion elsewhere, starting in the world of startups. I began applying my skills in marketing and eventually moved toward software, using applied statistics to improve how companies approached data. The more I worked with data, the more I enjoyed measuring things—assessing risks, understanding payoffs—and I realized data was my calling. That’s how I found my way to Oneflow. The opportunity to work in B2B software, which is more stable and has clear problems to solve, really appealed to me. Plus, the people I met here were incredibly interesting, and the brand felt anything but soulless.
So, beyond the brand, what attracted you to join Oneflow? How has your experience been working within the data team so far?
Oneflow was at the perfect stage for me. I love smaller companies where you can apply your skills across different areas and have a real impact, but I also wanted to work at a company big enough to have an established product and growth channels. Here, I found that balance.
We built the team from scratch and set the foundation for everything our Analytics team does now. The team is incredible—everyone is talented, fun, and we work really well together. It’s been an awesome experience.
I find that everyone here can pinpoint a project or challenge that they worked on that was a big growth experience for them. Do you have one you can share?
Oh yes! Earlier this year, we faced a big challenge clearly defining our framework for optimizing at the department level, and we needed to clearly define how our work contributed to the bigger picture. So, we developed a KPI tree that mapped out how everything related to the company’s goals. It was intense. We had a hard deadline - we basically went into “war room” mode. We broke off into smaller groups to research specific areas, and met daily to share findings and poke holes in each other’s analyses. It was the most productive week I’ve ever had. By the end, we felt like experts, and everything came together perfectly. I’ve never experienced that level of focus and collaboration at any other company.
Through this, how do you feel Oneflow supports continuous learning and development for data professionals?
Oneflow really gives us the freedom to learn and grow. In my team we have access to a learning platform, where we can take courses and learn from industry experts. It’s not just encouraged; it’s expected that we spend time learning.
Beyond that, my manager trusts that if we’re passionate about something, we’ll do it well and have the support to take ownership and run with it. It’s a great environment for personal and professional development.
What qualities do you see in your colleagues that help make the Analytics team so successful?
One thing that really stands out is how different we all are, yet we complement each other perfectly. We all bring different perspectives, but we have the same foundational knowledge, which makes collaboration smooth.
For example, I’m from Australia, and I tend to be diplomatic and careful about saying no. My colleague, who’s from Iran, is more direct and assertive. Our differences in approach actually work really well together—we challenge each other, which makes our work better and helps us grow.
Diversity is a key part of Oneflow’s culture. How does that show up in your team, and how does it impact innovation and collaboration?
You’ll never work anywhere as diverse as Oneflow. We have people from over 30 nationalities, a high percentage of female developers, and a wide range of beliefs and perspectives. That level of diversity could create friction, but here it’s the opposite—we only benefit from it.
In our team, for example, we challenge each other’s ideas, bring different approaches to the table, and that collaboration results in better outcomes. It’s a perfect mix of perspectives.
What excites you most about the future of data analysis at Oneflow, and how do you see your role evolving?
I’m really excited about how data is becoming more integrated into the company’s decision-making processes. There’s still a lot of room for growth, and I see us making faster and better decisions as we refine our data layers and reduce the time-to-insight.
AI is also starting to play a bigger role in automating some of our processes, which will make things even more efficient. Looking forward, I think my role will shift more toward understanding the business mechanics and asking the right questions to drive strategic decisions. It’s an exciting time to be in data!
How do Oneflow’s core values come to life in your day-to-day work?
The core values are something we don’t just talk about—they’re a part of how we work every day. “In transparency, we trust” is a big one. In our team, there’s no such thing as a secret. We share everything and work together to solve problems. “Beat Yesterday” is another value that stands out. We’re always pushing to do better, and you can see it in how we approach our work.
Any final thoughts for someone considering a role at Oneflow?
If you want to work with fun and interesting people, take initiative, and see the impact of your work, Oneflow is the place to be. It’s a collaborative environment where you have the freedom to drive projects and see them through. It’s a place where you’ll grow, both personally and professionally, and I couldn’t recommend it more.
